Katsoessani taaksepäin ensivaikutelmani kuluneesta vuodesta oli, että lukuunottamatta hidasta paluuta ‘normaaliin’ elämään pandemian rajoitusten jälkeen tai Ukrainan sodan järkytystä ja kauhua, minulle henkilökohtaisesti ei tapahtunut paljoakaan. Muutamat erilaisiin hakemuksiin hiljattain saamani kielteiset päätökset loivat vaikutelman, etten saanut aikaiseksi mitään kummempaa. Kun katson tapahtumien, esitelmien ja julkaisujen luetteloa tilanne on itse asiassa päinvastainen. Minun on syytä olla kiitollinen vuoden aikana saamistani monista kutsuista ja tilaisuuksista. Ehkä tärkeimmät saavutukset, ottaen huomioon mitä lupasin TAIKEn apurahaa varten laaditussa suunnitelmassa, ovat näyttely Forum Boxissa helmikuussa ja kirja Performing and Thinking with Trees, joka julkaistiin joulukuussa, molemmat liittyen aiempaan hankkeeseeni Kohtaamisia huomattavien ja huomaamattomien puiden kanssa (Meetings with Remarkable and Unremarkable Trees) . Podcastia Puhetta puille (Talking with Trees), jota aloittelin jo edeltävänä vuonna olen nyt työstänyt aktiivisesti osana nykyistä hankettani Miettii mäntyjen kanssa (Pondering with Pines). Muita jännittäviä kokemuksia, vuoden tuomia lahjoja, olivat Wood Art Residency Bodafors, ryhmäresidenssi In Light of Plants ja esiintyminen Sanna Kekäläisen teoksessa Epidermis. Ja lisäksi osallistuminen paikan päällä konferensseihin Weimarissa ja Reykjavikissa, sekä Bang Bang performanssifestivaaliin Baselissa ja Seven of Seven festivaaliin Myymälä2:sa Helsingissä ja moniin muihin tapahtumiin… Kiitos teille kaikille!
Olen luetellut eri tapahtumat ja toiminnat ryhmittäin tässä alla, kronologisessa järjestyksessä sen sijaan, että tuorein olisi ylimpänä kuten blogeissa yleensä, pääosin pitääkseni niistää kirjaa. Vanhemmiten unohdan helposti mitä tapahtui, missä ja milloin… (suomennan osan niistä kunhan kerkiän)

An exhibition and a maple tree in Stockholm
A small exhibition, “Furorna i Bodafors” [the pines in Bodafors] in the gallery at the Malmsten school in Lidingö, Stockholm, as well as a talk to the students there, was included in my commitments related to the Wood Art Residency Bodafors. Alessandra di Pisa, the curator, helped me plan and actually built the exhibition, which opened on 22 November with a talk at 9 am. Some of the videos created during the residency are on display in small monitors, with my recorded voice on headphones. The photo above is by Leif Burman; the exhibition is documented (in Swedish) on an RC page, here.
I also returned to the maple tree in Kastellholmen, a small island next to Skeppsholmen in the centre of the city. I made a small test conversation with it, in Swedish, but still have not decided what to do with it really. I visited it already in October, when it still had all its leaves:

En utställning och en lönn i Stockholm
En liten utställning, “Furorna i Bodafors” i Malmsten skolans galleri i Lidingö, Stockholm, och en föreläsning for eleverna där ingick i mina åligganden i samband med Wood Art Residency Bodafors. Kuratorn Alessandra di Pisa hjälpte mig att planera och i själva verket byggde utställningen, som öppnade den 22 november med en föreläsning klockan 9 på morgonen. Några av de videon jag gjorde under residensperioden finns att se i små monitorer, med min inspelade röst i hörlurar. Dessutom återvände jag till lönnen på Kastellholmen, en liten ö intill Skeppsholmen i stadens centrum. Jag spelade in ett försök till samtal med den, på svenska, men har fortfarande in beslutat mig för vad jag skall göra med den. Jag besökte den redan i oktober, och då hade den ännu kvar sina löv:

Näyttely ja vaahtera Tukholmassa
Pieni näyttely, “Furorna i Bodafors” [Bodaforsin hongat] Malmsten koulun galleriassa Lidingössä Tukholmassa sekä luento opiskelijoille siellä kuului velvollisuuksiini osana Wood Art Residency Bodafors’ia. Kuraattori Alessandra di Pisa auttoi minua suunnittelemaan ja toisiasiassa rakensi näyttelyn, joka avattiin 22 marraskuuta klo 9 aamulla. Osa residenssin aikana tekemistäni videoista on esillä pienissä monitoreissa, äänitetty puheeni kuulokkeissa. Valokuva yllä on Leif Burmanin ottama. Palasin myös vaahteran luo pienellä Kastellholmen saarella, Skeppsholmenin vieressä kaupungin keskustassa. Äänitin kokeeksi pienen keskustelun sen kanssa, ruotsiksi, mutten ole vielä päättänyt mitä sen kanssa tekisin. Kävin sen luona jo lokakuussa, kun sillä vielä oli lehtensä tallella:

Memory of the Landscape
For the events celebrating Helsinki day on 12 June I chose a few examples of the videos depicting the yearly cycle of the landscape on Harakka Island that I recorded during the years 2002-2014, as a pilot version of sorts of the whole series of Animal Years. Two videos recorded in the year of the ox (2009-2010), one in the year of the hare (2011-2012) and four in the year of the dragon (2012-2013) can be viewed via QR codes placed in the landscape from these webpages of mine. För evenemangen på Helsingforsdagen 12.6. valde jag några exempel på de videon som skildrar årets kretslopp i landskapet på ön Stora Räntan som jag spelat in under åren 2002-2014, som ett slags pilotversion av hela serien av Animal Years eller Djuråren. Två videon inspelade under oxens år (2009-2010), en video från harens år (2011-2012) och fyra videon från drakens år (2012-2013) kan ses via QR koder i landskapet på dessa mina webbsidor. En performance med videon tisdagen den 26 april i Myymälä2 galleriet som en del av evenemanget Seven of Seven. Jag hoppas kunna installera fyra ”stationer” i det lilla utrymmet, och bjuda in publiken att utföra övningarna efter att jag gjort några varv. Se stillbilderna på min tallblogg, här.
Meetings with Spruces and Birches
The title of the exhibition in Gallery Forum Box in Helsinki (11.2.-6.3.2022) alludes to the project Meetings with Remarkable and Unremarkable Trees that it is part of. Besides the “balcony” (parvi) the exhibition comprises the small Mediabox where you can show one work, in this case Dear Deceased (6 min 26 sec), see image above, a letter to a dead spruce written in English and added as a voice-over. The work is now in the AV-archive as well, here. The main work in the exhibition is Day with Old Tjikko 1 (17 min 45 sec), performed and recorded in May 2019 with the ancient spruce tree on Fulufjället mountain in Dalarna, Sweden. All the other works, including the one in Mediaboxi, were made in September 2020 during a one month Mustarinda residency in Hyrynsalmi, northeastern Finland.
