The year 2019 was my third year with trees, and the second year of the artistic research project Performing with Plants at Stockholm University of the Arts Research Centre, as professor of performance, art and theory. Now that is all finished, and I will be writing a proper report of the project soon. Here I am only listing things I have done during the year, some of which are part of the project and others not.

A brief presentation of the project, on the SKH-website, and for more details go to the living archive on the Research catalogue. This project was funded by the Committee for artistic research at the Swedish Research Council and hosted by Stockholm University of the Arts.
During the year I have also been working with the project How to do things with performance? – Miten tehdä asioita esityksellä?, a four-year research project funded by the Academy of Finland, with Hanna Järvinen, Tero Nauha and Pilvi Porkola. More info about that project on the website of HTDTWP with links to blog and living archive on the RC.
But what was really important during this year? What was special compared to previous years? I cannot really see that clearly, but in some sense these two years in Stockholm have been like a kind of sabbatical, where I have had the chance to focus on my artistic research and writing, but still had a context of discussion to participate in. Sheer luxury! Compared to that general feeling it feels trivial to list all kinds of works and events, but I am doing it anyway, simply to have them noted somewhere.

Vuosi 2019 puiden kanssa – yhteenvetoa
Vuosi 2019 oli kolmas vuoteni puiden kanssa, ja toinen vuosi taiteellista tutkimusprojektia Performing with Plants Tukholman Taideyliopiston tutkimuskeskuksessa, esityksen, taiteen ja teorian professorina. Nyt se on päättynyt jag kirjoitan kunnollisen raportin projektista, kohta. Tässä luettelen vain asioita, joita olen tehnyt tänä vuonna. Jotkut niistä ovat osa projektia, jotkut eivät ole.

Vuoden aikana olen työskennellyt myös tutkimushankkeessa How to do things with performance? – Miten tehdä asioita esityksellä?, joka on nelivuotinen Suomen Akatemian rahoittama tutkimushanke yhdessä Hanna Järvisen, Tero Nauhan ja Pilvi Porkolan kanssa. Mutta mikä oli todella tärkeää tänä vuonna? Mikä oli erityistä verrattuna aikaisempiin vuosiin? En näe sitä kovin selvästi, mutta jollakin tapaa nämä kaksi vuotta Tukholmassa ovat olleet kuin eräänlaiset sapattivuodet, koska minulla on ollut mahdollisuus keskittyä taiteelliseen tutkimukseeni ja kirjoittamiseen, mutta olen silti ollut osa keskustelukontekstia. Silkkaa ylellisyyttä! Tähän perusvaikutelmaan verrattuna tuntuu merkityksettömältä luetella kaikenlaisia töitä ja tapahtumia, mutta teen sen kuitenkin, jotta ne olisivat kirjattuina jonnekin.

Året 2019 med träd – ett sammandrag
Året 2019 var mitt tredje år med träd, och det andra året av det konstnärliga forskningsprojektet Att uppträda / samarbeta med växter vid Forskningscentret på Stockholms Konstnärliga Högskola, som professor i performance, konst och teori. Nu är det slut på det och jag kommer att skriva en ordentlig rapport om projektet, snart. Här räknar jag bara upp saker som jag gjort under året. Vissa saker är en del av projektet, andra är det inte.

Men vad var verkligen viktigt under året? Vad var speciellt jämfört med tidigare år? Jag kan inte riktigt se det klart, men på något sätt har dessa två år i Stockholm varit som ett slags sabbatsår, då jag haft möjlighet att fokusera på min konstnärliga forskning och på skrivandet, men har ändå haft ett diskussionssammanhang att delta i. Ren lyx! Jämfört med den övergripande känslan verkar det betydelselöst att räkna upp all slags arbeten och tilldragelser, men jag gör det ändå för att ha dem nedtecknade någonstans.

Visiting Olive Trees in Ulldecona
As a kind of ending for the project Performing with Plants I visited the ancient olive trees in Ulldecona in Catalonia. I got the idea from an article on the internet which caught my attention. It describes the 1700 year old Farga de L’Arion, which i decided to visit. That was easier said than done, but i did reach the tree in the end, together with a group of Spanish tourists. It was possible to enter the privately owned area only on a guided tour. Here below is a picture of the sign by the tree, and then the ancient tree, protected by a fence. There was no way I could perform with the tree, I did not even try. A friendly tourist colleague took two photos of me with the tree, as “evidence”:
I had accepted the situation already before the visit, because i had the opportunity to spend time with other ancient olive trees in two other places in the area, that could be reached on foot and with no people around, at least this time of then year. The first place was the olive grove La Foia de Ulldecona, on Thursday, and there i chose one of the trees (number 968, see image above and here below) and spent a little more time together with it.
The monumental olive trees on the slope by Eremita del Remei near Alcanar I visited on Friday, and there I couod sit and pose with the trees as much as I wanted:
And to end with the only image that I discarded, because its colors did not fit the series, despite the fact that I found a perfect resting place lying on and between two branches looking up at the sky through the foliage, although not distinguishable among the shadows.
Hos olivträden i Ulldecona
Som ett slags avslutning på projektet Att uppträda med växter besökte jag de urgamla olivträden i Ulldecona i Katalonien. Det var framför allt en artikel på nätet som fångade min uppmärksamhet. Där talades det om den 1700 år gamla Farga de L’Arion, som jag bestämde mig för att besöka. Det var lättare sagt än gjort, men visst kom jag fram till trädet slutligen, tillsammans med en grupp spanska turister. Man kunde komma in på de privata ägorna endast på en guidad tur. Här är en bild på skylten vid det monumentala trädet, och sedan själva åldringen, som är omgärdad med ett staket. Någon chans att uppträda med trädet hade jag inte, jag försökte inte ens. Men en vänlig turistkollega tog två bilder på mig, som “bevis”:
Jag hade accepterat situationen redan innan besöket, för jag hade haft möjlighet att umgås med uråldriga olivträd på två andra ställen i trakten, dit man kunde ta sig till fots och där det inte fanns andra människor åtminstone så här års. Det första stället var olivdungen La Foia de Ulldecona, på torsdagen, och där jag valde jag ut ett av träden (nummer 968, se bilden ovan och här nedan) och tillbringade lite mera tid tillsamman med den.
De monumentala olivträden på sluttningen vid Eremita del Remei nära Alcanar besökte jag på fredagen, och där satt jag och poserade med dem av hjärtats lust:
Den enda bilden jag ratade, som inte passar in i serien på grund av sin färgskala, trots att jag just i det här trädet hittade en särskilt bra plats att ligga i grenklykan och betrakta himlen genom lövverket, även om man inte kan urskilja mig bland skuggorna, är den här:
Oliivipuiden luona Ulldeconassa
Eräänlaisena päätöksenä projektille “Esiintyä kasvien kanssa” kävin tervehtimässä ikivanhoja oliviipuita Ulldeconassa Kalatomniassa. Verkosta löytämäni artikkeli kiinnitti huomioni. Siinä kerrotaan 1700 vuotta vanhasta oliivipuusta Farga de L’Arion, jota päätin lähteä tapaamaan. Se olikin helpommin sanottu kuin tehty, mutta pääsinhän minä puun luokse lopulta, espanjalaisen turistiryhmän kanssa. Yksityiselle alueelle pääsi vain opastetulla kierroksella. Tässä on kuva kyltistä puumonumentin luona ja sitten itse puuvanhuksesta, joka on suojattu aidalla. Minulla ei ollut minkäänlaista mahdollisuutta esiintyä puun kanssa, en edes yrittänyt. Mutta ystävällinen turistikollega otti kaksi valokuva minusta puun kanssa, “todisteeksi”:
Hyväksyin tilanteen jo ennen vierailua, sillä minulla oli ollut mahdollisuus viettää aikaa vanhojen oliivipuiden kanssa kahdessa muussa paikassa lähistöllä, jonne pääsi jäalan ja joissa ei ollut muita ihmisiä ainakaan tähän aikaan vuodesta. Ensimmäinen paikka oli oliivitarha La Foia de Ulldecona, torstaina, ja siellä valitsin yhden puista, (numero 968, katso kuva yllä ja tässä alla) jonka kanssa vietin vähän enemmän aikaa.
Monumentaaliset oliivipuut rinteessä Eremita del Remei’n luona lähellä Alcanaria tapasin perjantaina, ja niiden luona istuin poseeraamassa niin pitkään kuin halusin:
Lopuksi vielä ainoa karsimani kuva, se joka ei sovi joukkoon sävyjensä takia, vaikka juuri tuossa puussa löysin ihanan paikan maata oksanhangassa ja katsella lehvistön läpi taivasta, vaikka minua ei kuvassa erotakaan varjoista.
